Species Spotlight: Kousa Dogwood

Kousa Dogwood bearing fruit

(Cornus kousa)

  • Originates from Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea
  • Full sun to partial shade
  • Slower growing with less than 1 to 2 feet of growth per year
  • Produces showy 3 to 5 inch flower-like structures in spring
  • “Flowers” are followed by also showy fruit that attracts birds and small mammals
  • Roughly 15 to 30 feet high and is an excellent focal plant for yards and gardens
  • Likes medium amount of moisture at the roots throughout the year especially in the hot summers we experience here in St. Louis
  • Light to medium green foliage from the spring until fall when the leaves develop a deep maroon color before falling off. The bark has an interesting puzzle-piece-like texture that can be considered as showy.
