Species Spotlight: Kousa Dogwood

Meet the Kousa Dogwood

(Cornus kousa)

This tree:

  • Originates from Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea
  • Prefers full sun to partial shade
  • Grows slowly with less than 1 to 2 feet of growth per year
  • Produces showy 3-to-5-inch flower-like structures (bracts) in spring
  • “Flowers” are followed by also showy fruit that attracts birds and small mammals
  • Grows roughly 15 to 30 feet high and is an excellent focal plant for yards and gardens
  • Likes medium amount of moisture at the roots throughout the year especially in the hot summers we experience here in St. Louis
