Meet the Kousa Dogwood
(Cornus kousa)
This tree:
- Originates from Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea
- Prefers full sun to partial shade
- Grows slowly with less than 1 to 2 feet of growth per year
- Produces showy 3-to-5-inch flower-like structures (bracts) in spring
- “Flowers” are followed by also showy fruit that attracts birds and small mammals
- Grows roughly 15 to 30 feet high and is an excellent focal plant for yards and gardens
- Likes medium amount of moisture at the roots throughout the year especially in the hot summers we experience here in St. Louis
